The Coming Avatar

Halcyon, CA: The Temple of the People, c. 1918. 12mo, 45 pp, saddle-stapled in blue printed wraps.

An early, and key publication issued by the Temple of the People, the Theosophical intentional community in Halcyon, California, which still continues today; the composer Henry Cowell was associated with the community around the time of the publication of this work The introduction is attributed to the "Guardian in Chief," which, if the 1918 date which OCLC assigns is correct, would mean that it was written by Francia A. La Due, who was Guardian until 1922; however, we have also seen the pamphlet attributed to William H. Dower, who was Guardian from 1922-1937.

The text is based upon the messianic revelation of the coming avatar put forth by the Great White Brotherhood in 1898, and predicts the avatar would appear in 1928, with references to H.P. Blavatsky in the text.

Rare. OCLC locates only two holdings.

Near fine with small minor tape ghosts inside front and back covers. Item #31288
