Tess Razalle Her Book [Manuscript]

np: The Artist, 1922. 8vo, 52 leaves of linen rag paper, brad bound at left margin. Titled in pencil on cover.

A manuscript notebook of poems and several drawings, all in graphite save for three pages which are in ink. There are 48 pages of poems, and nine drawings. Some of the drawings are of landscapes and the sea, perhaps of the Santa Monica area. The poems are accomplished, showing the influence perhaps of Emily Dickinson.

Teresa Razalle-Carter was born in Los Angeles, but her family moved to Santa Monica when her father died. Tess became a professional artist and a saddle-maker at an early age, eventually opening a studio in Santa Monica on 14th which became a center for the artist and bohemian scene in town, and she eventually co-designed the city seal, illustrated at least one children's book, and designed murals. Some of her paintings depict fantastic scenes. The poetry here, with the liberal use of dashes and internal rhytme, seems to be somewhat influenced by Emily Dickinson.

Some tining, mild staining, and a couple of droplet stains to cover, but sound, clean throughout, and very good. Item #31154
