Merce Cunningham John Cage [Handbill]
Portland, Ore. Reed College, 1949. 8vo, single sheet of card stock folded once. Mimeographed from typescript, the beautiful typographical design by Barbara Walker and Virginia Ragsdale.
The handbill for this early performance by Cage and Cunningham at Reed College, well in advance of their Black Mountain years. It is tempting to think who may have been in the audience that night, as it occured while Lew Welch, Gary Snyder, and Philip Whalen were all attending Reed.
The program lists the works, which included "Amores One and Four" and A Valentine Out of Season" by John Cage, and "Root of an Unfocus," "Totem Ancestor," "Mysterious Adventure," "Dream," and "Monkey Dances" by Cunninghman.
Additional vertical fold, with a shallow chip to upper left hand corner, not affecting text, and a name and address written lightly in pencil to back cover. About very good, and a rare and ephemeral survivor, this being the first example of the program we've seen. Item #30683
