The Equinox Vol. I, No. 5. The Review of Scientific Illuminism

London: Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent and Co., 1911. First edition. Large 8vo, xiv + 158 + 178 (Supplement) + x (Advertisements) pp, bound in illustrated paper over boards backed in cloth, with a printed spine label. No dust jacket as issued. The early issues of the Equinox were printed in editions of 1000 copies, and later numbers in editions of probably 500 copies.

"So I found that the format of The Equinox shocked the bookseller; worse still, it was not a book, being issued periodically, nor a magazine, being to big and well produced!" - Aleister Crowley, Confessions, p. 606.

"With the publication of this REVIEW begins a completely new adventure in the history of mankind." -Crowley, from the foreword of Number 1.

The fifth issue of the original incarnation of the Equinox, one of the most remarkable periodicals of the 20th century. A substantial issue, printing Liber CCCCXVIII (XXX Aerum), aka The Vision and The Voice. Also, contributions from Aleister Crowley, Ananda Metteya, Ethel Ramsay, Victor Neuberg, Francis Bendick et al.

Due to the bulk of the periodical and the board bindings, issues of the Equinox are quite fragile, and are often found with broken bindings. This is an intact, very good, complete copy, showing some old tape ghosts to the head and crown of spine, darkening to the spine and wear to the spine label, and addition minor chipping and wear, with some minor chipping to the cancel sheet which protrudes past the fore edge, but with the binding completely intact and the interior bright - a very good example.
