Leute, die zur See fahren wollen, müssen tätowiert sein!

np: c. 1910's-20's. 3 x 5 7/16" postcard, printed in color, with divided back and a numerical code of "84 29" at lower margin. No publisher listed. Written and addressed in German holograph at verso, with a German postmark which is partially legible.

The postcard features a sailor tattooing a fellow sailer, who rests his pipe companionably on the tattooers shoulder. The title, roughly translated into English, is "People who want to go to see must have tattoos!" There is what appears to be an artists' monograph at lower margin incorporating the letter B, but we've been unable to determine the identity of the artist. We've not been able to determine a date - a German postcard website which is the sole reference online to the postcard asserts a date of 1921, but we've not been able to verify this. However, the postcard almost certainly dates from before the Brachtsche Decree.

The only example of the postcard we've handled. Item #30048
