Ein Geisteskranker als Künstler

Bern & Leipzig: Ernst Bircher, 1921. First edition. 8vo, viii, 126 pp + xx plates, printed wraps. Text in German.

The rare first publication on the work of Adolf Wölfli, written by a doctor at the Waldau Clinic in Bern where the artist was admitted in 1895, and where he would spend the rest of his life. The book is illustrated with 20 numbered plates, two which reproduce photographs of the artist and the rest devoted to reproductions of his work - three of which are printed in color.

This book not only brought Wölfli's work to the notice of the world, but also greatly influenced the conception of Outsider Art. The work was republished in an expanded edition last year, but this first edition is rare.

A battered example, with splitting to the spine, which two clumsy small tape repairs, and about 3" of the paper covering the spine missing, with the loss of Morgenthaler's name; the paper within is toned, but complete, and the binding still holds. A good only example of a fragile book elusive in any condition. Item #30003
