New York: St. Martin's Press, 1974. First American edition. 8vo, 515 pp, bound in brown boards and housed in a dust jacket illustrated with a photograph of Francesca Annis.
The first American edition of the superb, too-little known novel first published in 1934 in the UK, and based upon the case of Edith Thompson. The book was made into a 1973 television drama starring Francesca Annis, which prompted the long overdue publication of the first American edition. A photograph of Annis graces the front panel of the dust jacket. It also inspired the Sarah Waters novel The Paying Guests.
Slight, almost imperceptible sag to text block, crown very faintly softened, else a square, tight, fine copy, in a bright, unclipped dust jacket which shows only some faint rubbing to the spine ends and a 1/3" closed tear to head of front panel, else fine - the nicest example we've handled.
