Amsterdam: Stedelijk Museum, 1986. First`edition. Oblong 4to, 83 pp, printed wraps. text in Dutch and English translation. With a preface by Wim Beeren.

First edition of this landmark catalog issued in conjunction with Haring's first solo museum exhibition, this copy signed and dated in the year of publication with drawings made to the frontispiece photograph of Keith Haring as a child. the show was held at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1986.

"... because it's a major museum in Amsterdam, the show had phenomenal attendance. For me, it was an overwhelming experience, showing at the Stedelijk Museum. I felt I had really accomplished something."

As well as showing existing works, Haring also live-painted a work on a 12 x 20 meter canvas for the exhibition while listening to hip-hop on a boombox. Outside of the museum, Haring explored Amsdterdam with Niels Shoe Meulman, Jan Rothuizen and other artists, and painted his large sea monster mural on the side of the former Stedelijk art depot, his second largest surviving work in Europe, which is currently in the process of being restored. Haring's time in Amsterdam is documented in the recently published book The Dutch Adventures of Keith Haring.

As well as signing and dating the inside portrait,, he has also written the phrase "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" and drawn devil's horns and a forked tail on the left figure, and a halo and angel wings to the right hand figure, a remarkable self-portrait.

A couple of small faint coffee splash marks to the cover, some minor wear to extremities including a small surface ding to spine. Very good. Item #29608
