Night Voices No. 3

Van Nuys, CA: Night Voices, 1980. 4to. Offset printed in b/w, side-stapled.

Third issue of the legendary goth / punk / deathrock fanzine, that would have a critical influence on the look of some of the darker strands of post-punk on the west coast. This issue is notable for including a one page manifesto by Castration Squad, modelled after Valerie Solanas' Scum Manifesto, and proposes that the only recourse for "thrill-seeking girls" is to undermine the government, reorganize the legal system, reject female role models, and finally, to repair men.

Castration Squad included as members Alice Bag and Mary Bat-Thing - who later fronted 45 Grave as Dinah Cancer. Other members included Tracy Lea, Phranc, and Elissa Bello, later of the Go-Go's.

This issue also includes material on Bauhaus, Crass, U.X.A., etc. and a small reproduction of a magazine ad for the 1980 show by Joy Division at the Starwood, which was cancelled because of the suicide of Ian Curtis, here with the words "draw your own conclusions" written over it.
