The Birth of the Theatre of the Ridiculous!

This was the first appearances of both of these plays, which Ronald Tavel had originally written for the Andy Warhol films of the same name. The press release notes that both pieces were staged with the permission of Warhol, and concludes that "Warhol will film SHOWER duriung an actual performance of the play during the first weekend in August." The press release prints Tavel's one sentence summation of the approach of the plays, "We have passed beyond the absurd: our position is absolutely preposterous." This statement and the plays were the beginning of the Theatre of the Ridiculous, and this was John Vaccaro's first directing credit.

The shower drawing featured on the poster is attributed to J.S., and appears to be the work of Jack Smith.

The poster is good only. with a strong horizontal fold, and is heavily foxed. The press release has a faint old horizontal fold and a touch of toning to upper margin, else clean and near fine. Item #29136
