'Putzen' [Mail Art Happening Proposal]

Stuttgart: Reflections Press, 1968. 6 1/8 x 8 1/8", two sheets of thin card stock stapled together at the upper left hand corner. The cover is illustrated with a photograph of Vostell's work 'Türklinken Plastik' by T. Tilly.

A remarkable proposal for a mail art happening by Vostell in collaboration with Albrecht D.'s Reflection Press. The text proposes that the receiver of the work carefully clean the door handle of a bank, supermarket or other public facilit , and photographically document the action. The second half of the postcard is a pre-printed coupon addressed to the press, upon which the photograph should be mounted and sent in with 10 DM, the coupon to then be signed by Vostell and returned to the sender.

A brilliant, overlooked and prescient work which, almost 50 years later, has suddenly acquired new layers of significance in an age of pandemic and the failure of social institutions in our time.

Lightly toned, with a faint, almost imperceptible smudge to front panel, else fine. Item #28988
