New York: 2oth Century Gents, 1967. Flyer, 8 1/2 x 11", crudely mimeographed from typescript.
A manifesto issued June 5, 1967, calling for the liberation of Tompkins Square Park by citizens of the Lower East Side, followed by the seizure and control of the power plants and residences. The text goes on to denounce "'so-called 'hippies' and their jive 'flower power' because they know it another way of putting to sleep the sacred anger of the people against their breakable oppressors." [sic]. The text also attacks white kids moving into the LES, and for good measure, a jibe at the Hare Krishna's.
Though the Grateful Dead are not named in the tract, they had played their first NYC show in the park on the first, just days earlier, though the concert was called off in the afternoon due to noise complaints.
We can find no reference to a group by the name 20th Century Gents, but they seem to have been part of the LES milieu that spawned Up Against the Wall Motherfucker, Black Mask and the New York Provo.
Printed on cheap paper, now brittle, with creasing, toning, and some marginal chipping - else very good. Item #28986
