Aviary

New York: Egan Gallery, 1949. 8vo, single sheet folded to 5 1/2 x 8 1/2", offset printed in blue on cream paper. With a 1 pp. text by Donald Windham.

The exhibition catalog for the legendary 1949 exhibition of boxes by Cornell, his first exhibition, in which he emerged fully grown from the head of the post-war period, Athena-like, and nothing ever was the same afterwards. The catalog is not illustrated, but includes a list of all 26 boxes in the exhibition, from Parrot to Porthole Cage. Donald Windham provides a short but beautiful reflection on the boxes.

About four years later, Cornell would make his short experimental film, of a woman watching Pigeons, and also called it Aviary.

Near fine, with a touch of toning to margins and some light ceasing to tips. Slightly misfolded. Item #28647
