np: The Artist, [1994]. 4to, 56 leaves, each with an original xerox print on both recto and verso. Clip bound at left margin into an unprinted glassine cover and black leatherette back cover.

Untitled artist's book by the reclusive fashion photographer Steven Klein, printing images from his infamous 1994 photo shoot for The Design Industries Foundation for AIDS "Safer Sex is Hot Sex" program, a series of posters made to advertise the National AIDS hotline. Klein's sex-positive photographs, which featured transgressive images of beautiful, androgynous young people fucking in nature, became flashpoint images of AIDS awareness and advocacy in the 1990's, both lauded and condemned but never forgotten. The poster campaign was debated widely in the mainstream media, even reaching the pages of Newsweek.

The final poster campaign focused on just four of these photographs, treating them as discrete, isolated images that seem removed from the viewer. This book prints 112 images. Likely produced in only a handful of copies, if not unique, this represents the only known published record of the full range of images from the famous shoot. The high contrast and rich darkness of the xerox gives a sense of immediacy and intimacy to the images, and highlighting the power struggles at play between each couple or threesome. By returning these photographs to a longer sequence, Klein emphasizes the temporality and mystery of each tableaux.

This book was compiled by Steven Klein and given to a friend in the fashion industry - the provenance which we will provide to the buyer.

Some minor toning to left margin of glassine, which has a couple faint creases. A 2" section of the comb binding fastener at foot of back cover is missing. Near fine. Item #28251
