Gay Semiotics: A Photographic Study of Visual Coding Among Homosexual Men

San Francisco: NFS Press, 1977. First edition. 4to, 56 pp, wraps. Photographically illustrated in b/w.

The first edition of one of the key gay artists' books of the modern era, as well as a groundbreaking use of photography in an artist's book. The text was printed on the acetates, and mimic not only the look of advertisements of the era in their layout, but media representations of gay men at the time.

The book was published by the criminally underacknowledged NFS press, who also published Fischer's Castro Street x 24. Gay Semiotics was recently republished by Cherry and Martin. Highly uncommon in the first edition.

Near fine with a bit of rubbing along the spine and some very minor handling creases to wraps. Item #28067
