Amsterdam: Kosmos, 1938. First edition. 8vo, 227 pp, bound in black cloth decoratively stamped in silver foil. No dust jacket.
First edition and only edition of the debut novel by the the Gay Dutch artist Willem Arondeus, remembered today for his heroic actions as a forger and in the bombing of the central records office in Amsterdam so that the identity of Jews living in Amsterdam couldn't be determined by the occupying German army in WWII, for which he was executed for five years after the publication of this novel. As well as the cover stamping and typography, Arondéus also illustrated the title page and chapter headings in the text in his remarkable style.
Front hinge cracked, though the binding remains firm. The spine is slightly cocked. Otherwise an clean and well-preserved very good example.
