The Alternate Sex. Or the Female Intellect in Man, and the Masculine in Women. Charles Godfrey Leland.

The Alternate Sex. Or the Female Intellect in Man, and the Masculine in Women

New York: Funk & Wagnalls, 1904. First edition. 8vo, vii, 134 pp, bound in gilt-stamped brown cloth.

Leland's last work, completed shortly before his death in Florence, and edited by Mrs. Joseph Pennell. A remarkable work, which predated Edward Carpenter's The Intermediate Sex, and which, among other things, according to Robb, "insisted on the bisexuality of all remarkable people." [Graham Robb, 'Strangers: Homosexual Love in the 19th Century, p. 191]

Small ticket pasted down onto fep, a touch of toning, boards very slightly rubbed at tips but a very good or better example, with the binding sound and the gilt still bright. Item #27657
