Gent, Belgie: Imschoot, 1989. First edition. One of only 30 numbered and signed copies bound in cloth. 8vo, 80 pp, bound in full green cloth. Printed green dust jacket.
Artist's book based on the original portfolio of 27 photographic prints. The subject of each photograph appears to be a flower, but is actually installation views of glass replicas of each flower, taken in the Harvard Botanical Museum's Ware Collection of Blaschka Glass Models. In each case, the flowers were chosen from countries in which political disappearances had been reported in the year 1985. By rearranging them according to country and violence, rather than by the method of scientific classification used by the institution, the book subtly but powerfully reveals the biases inherent in institutional and archival classification systems.
The book has become increasingly scarce in recent years, now very rare in the special edition. A fine example. Item #27462
