Album of Weimer Notgeld

[Northern Germany]: c. 1921-23. Contemporary album, 10 x 13 1/2", bound in padded faux crocodile-skin boards, with gilt-stamped device to front panel (entitled 'Notgeld Album'). With 258 examples of Notgeld, each printed in color, and each mounted loose via mobile fasteners.

A remarkable and carefully assembled album of Notgeld, the emergency currency that German firms and citites began to issue following the WWI currency crisis. This collection consists of Sirienscheine, or notgeld which were produced especially for the collector's market. Most of these date from c. 1921-22. The phenomenon largely ceased following the hyper-inflation of 1923.

The majority of examples here belong to the sub-genre "Reutergeld", issued to commemorate the poet Fritz Reuter. Many of the examples here depict the beach culture and fashion of the Osteebad region.

Near fine. Item #27231
