Polemic Vol. 4, No. 1 [With a TLS from Roy Lichtenstein Regarding His Woodblock Print Dust Jacket]

Polemic Society of Western Reserve University, 1959. First edition. 8vo, 135 pp, side-stapled in unprinted covers. In the original dust jacket, an original unsigned abstract woodblock print by Roy Lichtenstein. With an ALS from the artist regarding the print.

A very early, abstract print by Lichtenstein, predating his later banal pop cool style. According to the Mary Lee Corlett, in the Roy Lichtenstein Catalogue Raisonné, "For a brief time in the late 1950s, Lichtenstein was a latecomer to the abstract expressionist style. This is visible in his last two prints of that decade. Both were made for Polemic, a literary-art journal published by the student council at Adelbert College, Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio." However, in the TLS here, Lichtenstein states "This is a work I did for Polemic Magazine. It was the only issue I contributed to. Best regards, Roy Lichtenstein."

The woodblock jacket is slight toned at spine, but near fine, remaining remarkably bright and crisp and far better than usually found. Item #27089

Price: $850.00
