This expansive work on tattoos grew out of De Tromelin's doctoral thesis, in which he studied 788 subjects and 4,142 tattoos, making classifcations between ethnic, professional, and allegorical tattoos. The work is not illustrated, but was one of the largest such surveys of the time an important contribution to scholarship in the pre-war era. Graven cites the work frequently, and draws attention to the importance of the bibliography especially.

OCLC locates 13 holdings worldwide, only one of which is in the US.

A somewhat battered copy, with a sound bump to head of spine, and a split and some chipping to to the paper covering the spine, but the binding still holds and ist sturdy. Item #27059
