np: 1993. Five 8 x 10" photographs, with Adelman's rubberstamp and date to verso. To which is added 30 additional prints, either unattributed or by different photographers.
A collection of 5 scarce vintage prints of fetish scenes by the legendary Civil Rights photographer, best known for his photographs of Martin Luther King, Jr., James Baldwin, Malcolm X and other figures of the movement, and for his photographs of Andy Warhol and other artists in NYC. Adelman trained in photography under the legendary Alexey Brodovitch for several years before volunteering as a photographer for the Congress for Racial Equality, in which capacity he took some of the most widely known images of the Civil Rights Movement, some of which were collected in his book Mine Eyes Have Seen: Bearing Witness to the Struggle for Civil Rights.
Adelman's fetish photography is the least known corner of his impressive oeuvre, and were not widely distributed or published during his lifetime. The Library of Congress acquired his archive in 2017, including his fetish work, but these are the first such prints we've seen in the wild. Adelman brings an unusual sense of warmth and vulnerability to the subject. Item #26850
