Division Leap and Fast Books are excited to announce the release of My Funny Valentine, a previously unknown collage book by John P. "Johnny" Dodd.

In his public life, Dodd was well-known as one of the most influential lighting designers in the downtown scene, including his work at the Caffe Cino at the birth of the Off-Off Broadway movement, Judson Church, La Mama, The Living Theater, and other venues, and for his lighting work for the punk band The New York Dolls. Others knew him as the subject of Andy Warhol’s film Haircut No. 3, and for his appearance in Warhol’s film Kiss. Few people, however, seemed to know of Dodd’s visual work as a collagist, which he practiced in private.

My Funny Valentine is the first publication of Dodd’s collages, reproducing 93 of them in full color which were discovered layering the disbound pages of a 5 x 8” journal. These collages, probably made in the late 1960’s, are like none we have ever seen. Guided by color, they give off a cosmic sense of space and distance while also including hints of narrative and intimate references to his friends and collaborators in the downtown art scene in New York City in the 1960's, including Warhol, Fred Herko, Charles Stanley, and others.

We hope that this book, and the recent discovery in Andy Warhol's archive of one of Dodd's large scale collages, will bring Dodd's accomplished body of visual work to a larger audience. Item #26061
