Black Mountain College: nd. 12 x 16" sheet (image size approximately 8 x 10 1/2"), ink and gouche on paper. Signed by the artist at the lower right hand corner. Provenance: from the collection of Robert Creeley, with his ownership signature at verso, as well as the phrase "Black Mountain College EE-UU." Acquired from Creeley by Serendipity Books, with Peter Howard's notes at verso of plastic frame (not pictured).
A striking and unusual painting by the Black Mountain College artist and important member of the faculty, who taught there from 1946 until 1957. The attribution of the work to Black Mountain College in Creeley's ownership signature is significant in that most of Fiore's work from that era was destroyed in a 1953 fire, and the surviving work were collages - making this a rare survivor of his painting work from the BMC period.
The crude matte is heavily creased, and there is a small closed tear to the sheet at upper right margin, not affecting image, and some light additional creasing, but the image is clean and pigments remain bright. Item #26052
