Nr. 1. Comic Reich Strip

np: none, nd [c. 1968]. Square 16mo, [24] pp, saddle-stapled wraps. Illustrated with with panels of appropriated pornographic photographs.

An anonymously authored artists' book from the social and sexual revolution in the late 1960's in Germany which combines a critique of the relationship of capitalism to sex with appropriated pornographic images and references to the writings of Reich. Of particular interest is a critique of the concept of women as male property - "Privatbesitz des Mannes", matched with an image of two nude women cleaning house. The pornographic images appear to have been chosen on a perceived basis of sex positivity and non-coercion, and the booklet also was also constructed for utility, with an exhortation to pass along the booklet to "verklemmte kosumenten”.

The booklet concludes by asking readers not to buy the recent Kiepenheuer & Witsch edition of Reich, but to rather buy raubdruck, or pirate editions of it, and let the capitalist publishers “die on their books.”

A fascinating artifact which, in its diminuitive way, brings together so many important elements of the late 1960’s German counter-culture together - sexual freedom, critique of capitalism, the utilization of the pop form of the comic strip, the appropriation and detournement of mass cultural imagery, and the rise of Raubdruck, or pirate publishing - an underground shadow economy to legal, mainstream publishing that would not only allow otherwise overlooked or untouchable works to be circulated, but would also bankroll many student and protest groups of the era.
