Photograph of Yayoi Kusama [with] Program for Self-Obliteration: An Audio-Visual-Light Performance

New York: Black Gate Theater, [1967]. 4to, three sheets printed on rectos only, and stapled twice at the upper left hand corner. Cover sheet offset printed on yellow paper; second and third sheets mimeographed from typescript. With a photograph of Kusama [8 x 10" silver gelatin print, with the date June 13, 1967 rubberstamped at verso, along with Kusama's own address stamp and the address stamp for the Gate Theatre. Photograph unattributed, and the image is unfamiliar to us - however the Kusama's outfit, props, and the set seem to be from a series of photographs taken by Hal Reif, from which we've seen other images.

The program for the debut of this series of performances, held at the Black Gate Theater in New York. The cover sheet includes the text, "Become one with eternity. Obliterate your personality. Become part of your environment. Forget yourself. Self-destruction is the only way out! On your trip, take along one of our live bikini models." The cover sheet also advertises a Polka Dot Dance Party with Joe Jones and the Tone Deafs.

The second sheet includes notes on the show, and the final leaf, entitled "Personal History", lists her exhibitions to that date.

Scarce documentation from an important work.

The photograph has a paper clip ghost print, with a corresponding indent to the program. Some creasing and loss of gloss to the photograph, else very good. Program near fine with the aforementioned paper clip ghost. Item #25785
