Np: nd [c. 1930's]. Red balloon, approximately 4 1/2 x 2 1/2" deflated, with the word "Strike" printed in white in a gothic font.
A balloon probably designed for use in a labor strike, though we've been able to find no information about what group may have produced it. The font appears to be likely Franklin Gothic Extra Condensed, which was first drawn in 1906. Beautiful and simply designed, and still faintly redolent of the smell of honest rubber, a rare survivor.
Deflated and wrinkled, with some hairline splits along a couple of the wrinkles, but still remarkably supple. We have not attempted to inflate it.
Anybody want to use this as the template for a General Strike balloon? Item #25518
