[Chicago]: Ztangi: Distributed by Solidarity Bookshop, 1966. First edition. 4to, mimeographed from typescript and drawing. Stab-stapled in illustrated, mimeographed card covers [front cover from art by Max Ernst, and the back cover by Siné]. With folded, mimeographed sheet entitled "The Revenge of Emiliano Zapata" laid in, announcing the future publication of the periodical Surrealist Insurrection.
The first publication by the members of what would become the Chicago Surrealist Group, an anthology of Surrealist writing assembled to combat "the unforgivable paucity of surrealist writing in English", as Franklin Rosemont states in the foreward. With illustrations throughout by Hieronymus Bosch, Lester Dore, Torvald Faegre, Bernard Marszalek, and Franklin and Penelope Rosemont. It assembles Surrealist broadsides as well as texts by Artaud, André Breton, Benjamin Peret, Nicolas Calas, René Crevel, Pierre Mabille, Diego Rivera, Leon Trotsky, and Paul Nougé. With biographical notes.
The lettering and calligraphy, and their very successful translation through the mimeograph printing, make this a beautiful book - these people knew their way around a mimeograph machine.
A couple of tiny rust spots near staples, else a fine copy, the sharpest we've seen. Item #24794
