Deep South Piano. The Story of Little Brother Montgomery. Lark Gert zur Heide.

Deep South Piano. The Story of Little Brother Montgomery

London: Studio Vista, 1970. First edition. 8vo, 112 pp, photographically illustrated wraps. Illustrated with b/w photographs.

The first edition of this important study of piano blues, issued in Studio Vista's superlative Blues series edited by Paul Oliver. The book was the fruit of a trip made in 1968 by Heide through the American South, and relies heavily on interviews by him, providing a wealth of anecdotal detail in a very compact work. Though Little Brother Montgomery is the beginning thread of the story, the book covers the entire field of early piano blues, and includes biographical entries for a great many musicians that would perhaps be still forgotten if not for Heide's efforts. Recommended.

A sturdy near fine example with some light rubbing and traces of soiling to wraps. Item #24663
