Book of Magazine Verse. Jack Spicer.

Book of Magazine Verse

San Francisco: White Rabbit Press, 1970. First edition. 8vo, letterpress printed and perfect bound in wraps. First edition, one of 1500 copies.

A collection of poems submitted to magazines, here organized according to which magazine rejected them. The most brilliant aspect of the book design is that each of these sections is printed on paper made to mimic the paper stock on which each of the target publications was printed, so that here the Tish section is printed in blue. The cover is a parody of Poetry (Chicago) masthead, one of the magazines whose blinders are here displayed. Spicer certainly knew that many of these poems had no chance of being published in their intended publications, and the book design completes this brilliant spirit of detournee. Unfortunately, the second edition, which followed later that year, didn't preserve the various paper stock colors.
