This is a Raincoat Like Anybody Else's

Portland, Ore. Fredrik Averin, 2016. First edition. 4to, 1000 pp, printed wraps. One of a limited edition of 72 numbered copies, the first 29, lettered a–ö according to the Swedish alphabet, which come with a, 18 x 24" rubberstamped and numbered poster.

The newest artist's book from Portland's Fredrik Averin clocks in at a satisying six pounds, and uses an entire ream of paper, and yet the book feels even more expansive than it's commanding physical presence suggests. The Raincoat mines the saturated strata of pop culture for appropriated images, particularly magazine advertisements, interspersed with elements of concrete poetry to create a suggestive narrative about desire, loss, sexuality, divorce, vacations, fast cars, geography, cigarettes, parties, machismo, horses, and a host of other dissolute etceteras. The raincoat of the title, taken from a period advertisement, could be read as a metaphor for protection against the deluge of visual information which the book mines, but despite its size the book never drowns itself - each page is a careful gaze, and the end result is so cohesive and compelling that it can be read in one sitting.
