np: . Np: 1964. Offset lithograph on glassine in two sections, one 7 1/2 x 8", and one 4 x 8". . A bass clef score with notes. Signed and dated by Young at a later date (1973?), who has added a copyright date of 1964. Provenance: from the collection of Jackson Mac Low via the trade.
The score for this piece, that was composed on the occasion of the death of Jackson Mac Low and Iris Lezak’s child in 1961. This sheet was signed as a later date, with the copyright added, perhaps for publication.
The piece is a landmark in the history of minimalism, the low tones reminiscent of Tibetan chant. As Potter points out , this was the only early period Young piece to use staff notation aside from Composition 1969 #7, and was the last fully notated work until Chronos Kristalla in 1990.
We believe that this was printed for inclusion in the first Fluxus Box, though we've not compared copies physically. The copy pictured on the Fondazione Bonnotto website shows a third piece of glassine which includes three more bars of notation, not included here, though this copy doesn't bear the hole punches that the FB copy shows.
Perhaps incomplete, but rare; intriguing with the signature and copyright.
Very good with some moderate toning to the glassine. Item #21724
